Abstract

Doing anti-racism through the arts. A qualitative and visual research with young “Italians without citizenship”

The project aims to explore the artistic production of children of migration in Italy, young people who often feel “foreigners in their own country” or “Italians without citizenship”. Studies at the European level have highlighted the social relevance of art in “post-migration societies”, an opportunity to cross the symbolic and material boundaries present in increasingly plural and unequal cities.
By adopting an intersectional perspective and using qualitative methods (discursive interviews and collaborative visual ethnographies in two case studies) the research intends to investigate the transformative power of the arts for racialized young people.

The aim of this work is also to highlight through which artists and from which urban contexts conflicting productions emerge and challenge the systematic invisibilization of racism in the Italian society, legitimizing the possibility of expressing multiple belongings and opening ways of exit from social marginality.
